If you are unsure whether your vehicle has enough towing power please contact us and we will be happy to help you choose the correct chain harrow to suit both your vehicle and the land you wish to harrow.

Trailed chain harrows can be towed behind any vehicle with a pin or ball hitch.

Mounted chain harrows can only be used with tractors with hydraulic 3 point linkage.

We always recommend you choose a chain harrow at least the width of the vehicle you are towing with. If you change your vehicle in the future or increase the amount of grass you need to harrow, you could choose a Semi-Professional chain harrow with a 5ft deep mat to start with then you have the option to upgrade to a Professional 10ft deep chain harrow at a later date by simply adding an extra mat and we would also recommend upgrading to a heavy duty drawbar.

Fixed Tine

13mm fixed steel tine mats feature a one-way pulling action

This lower costing harrow uses an aggressive action and will achieve good results.

3-way Pulling Action

3-way trailed harrows feature a 3-way pulling action giving you the option to choose passive, aggresive or smooth to suit your ground conditions.

Passive - reverse the mat so tines face backwards to give less ground penetration and a smoother action.

Aggressive - ensure tines face forwards for vigorious, deeper ground penetration, ideal for harder ground

Lighter - turn the mat upside for lighter harrowing - ideal for re-seeding.

Heavy Duty Drawbar

Heavy duty drawbars are 60mm diameter by 5mm thickness, with a starting weight of 14kg. They are fully detachable to allow for easier handling.

We strongly recommend all trailed harrows over 6ft wide have a drawbar of this quality and strength.

are available in various widths to allow chain harrow combinations up to 12ft wide as standard. Other widths are available upon request.

RIDE-ON MOVERS - trailed chain harrows

Towing chain harrows with a ride-on mower

We recommend a 4ft - 5ft wide Semi-Professional 5ft deep chain harrow

Ride-on mowers may be able to tow a larger harrow, depending on the size, tyres and ground conditions.

We would suggest choosing a Semi-Professional 5ft deep harrow initially to see how you get on, with a view to purchasing an additional mat to upgrade to a Professional 10ft deep chain harrow if suitable.

QUAD BIKES - trailed chain harrows

We recommend a 4ft - 8ft wide Semi-Professional 5ft deep chain harrow or a Professional 10ft deep harrow.

Larger quad bikes could possibly upgrade to Professional 10ft deep harrow depending on power, ground conditions (flat/hilly) and if they are 4-wheel drive.

As a general guide we would recommend the following:

Up to 250 = 4ft Semi-Professional
Up to 450 = 6ft Semi-Professional
650 upwards = 8ft Semi or Professional

ATVs - trailed chain harrows

We recommend a 6ft - 8ft wide Semi-Professional 5ft deep chain harrow or a Professional 10ft deep harrow.

Please consider the width of gateways and ensure the mat is wide enough to cover tyre marks.

4x4s - trailed chain harrows

We recommend a 6ft - 12ft wide Semi-Professional 5ft deep chain harrow or a Professional 10ft deep harrow.

We would always recommend going wider than the vehicle so you can see it in your mirrors and it minimises the chance of damage by keeping the towing vehicle further away from fences and hedges.

By utilising the interchangeable mat system you can purchase additional mats and drawbars of varying widths to allow use by smaller vehicles.

COMPACT TRACTORS - trailed or mounted chain harrows

Towing chain harrows with compact tractors

We recommend a 5ft - 12ft wide Semi-Professional 5ft deep chain harrow or a Professional 10ft deep harrow.

If your compact tractor has hydraulic 3 point linkage a mounted chain harrow could also be towed.

Remember to take into account the width of gateways when towing chain harrows.

FULL SIZE TRACTORS - trailed or mounted chain harrows

Towing chain harrows with full size tractors

We recommend towing a mounted chain harrow up to 20ft wide using a tractor with hydraulic 3 point linkage or of course a trailed harrow can also be used connected by a pin or ball hitch.

The main advantage of mounted chain harrows is the ability to lift the harrow for road transportation.

OTHER VEHICLES

We recommend either a Semi-Professional 5ft deep chain harrow or a Professional 10ft deep harrow if suitable.

As long as the chain harrow can be attached securely, most vehicles with suitable grip and power will do the job.

HORSES - trailed chain harrows

We recommend a Semi-Professional 5ft deep chain harrow upgrading to a Professional 10ft deep harrow if suitable

Harrows were originally designed to be towed behind a horse. Consider the type and size of the horse. We would normally recommend starting with one 5ft deep mat deep, upgrading to a 10ft deep mat later if suitable.
